Professor Stanisław Mazurkiewicz was born on May 19, 1940 in Jezierna in the Tarnopol Voivodeship. After obtaining his secondary school graduation certificate in 1957, he began his studies at the Medical Faculty of the Gdańsk Medical Academy (now Medical University of Gdańsk). He received his medical degree in 1963. From 1964 to 2010 he was employed at the Department and Research Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Locomotor System of the Gdańsk Medical Academy, taking successive steps in his professional career, and between 1997-2010 he fulfilled the role of the head of this unit. From 2011 to 2014, he was employed as a coordinator at the Clinical Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of Locomotor System Surgery of the Pomeranian Centre of Traumatology.
During his studies, he was the secretary of the University Council of the Polish Students Association and the president of the University Club of the Academic Sports Association of the Gdańsk Medical Academy.
He obtained the first degree specialization in 1967, and the second degree in 1971. In 1972, he defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “Evaluation of some gait elements in people with a stiff knee joint”. In 1989, he completed his postdoctoral studies with the dissertation entitled “Selected problems of diagnosis and treatment of inveterate anterior cruciate ligament injuries”. In 2000 he obtained the academic title of professor. He published 102 scientific papers. He delivered 140 lectures at national and international symposiums, conventions and congresses. He supervised twenty doctoral dissertations and two postdoctoral dissertations. He also reviewed nine postdoctoral dissertations. From 1990 he was a member of the Editorial Committee of the journal Chirurgia Narządu Ruchu i Ortopedia Polska (Polish Locomotor System Surgery and Orthopaedics), and from 1999 a member of the Program Board of the journal Ortopedia, Traumatologia, Rehabilitacja (Orthopaedics, Traumatology, Rehabilitation).
He was a member of the Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (PTOiTr) from 1967. He was, among others, the chairman of the Pomeranian Branch of PTOiTr. He was the secretary of the Main Board of PTOiTr (1991-1994) and its vice-president for two terms (1995-2002). In addition, he was a founding member of the Knee Surgery Section of the PTOiTr. From 2003, he was an honorary member of the Polish Society of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
Between 1991-1999 he was the voivodeship consultant for orthopaedics and traumatology of the locomotor system of the Gdańsk and Słupsk voivodeships, and from 1999 to 2014 he was a regional consultant for orthopaedics and traumatology of the locomotor system of the Pomeranian region.
Between 1999-2002 he was the deputy chancellor for clinical affairs at the Gdańsk Medical Academy.
The Professor’s main scientific interest was knee surgery, especially arthroscopic diagnostics, arthroscopy, with particular emphasis on methods of surgical treatment of damage to the anterior cruciate ligament, as well as topics associated with biomechanics and orthopaedics. He devoted part of his publications to the study of gait.
He was a precursor of arthroscopy in Poland. He conducted numerous courses and trainings in the field of knee surgery, with particular emphasis on arthroscopy. He trained orthopaedists, among others, from Belarus, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Russia and China.
He is also remembered as an active organizer of PTOiTr scientific congresses and symposiums organized by the Department and Research Clinic of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Locomotor System of the Gdańsk Medical Academy.
From 2010, he was employed at the Academy of Physical Education and Sport in Gdańsk, where he conducted classes in the field of orthopaedics, locomotor system traumatology and sports traumatology.
He was also decorated with the Golden Cross of Merit and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. In 2013, he received the Merit for Polish Orthopaedics and Traumatology award. During the last XXXIX Orthopaedic Days in Toruń in 2021, Professor Stanisław Mazurkiewicz was awarded the Medal of Professor Adam Gruca. In addition, in 1992 he received the Medal of Merit of the Gdańsk Medical Academy and in 1995 the medal of the 50th anniversary of the Gdańsk Medical Academy.
Professor Stanisław Mazurkiewicz died on November 11, 2022 in Gdańsk.
Profesor Stanisław Mazurkiewicz urodził się 19 maja 1940 roku w Jeziernie w województwie tarnopolskim. Po uzyskaniu świadectwa dojrzałości w 1957 roku rozpoczął studia na Wydziale Lekarskim Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku. Dyplom lekarza medycyny otrzymał w 1963 roku. Od 1964 do 2010 roku był zatrudniony w Katedrze i Klinice Ortopedii i Traumatologii Narządu Ruchu Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku, przechodząc kolejne etapy kariery zawodowej, a w latach 1997-2010 pełnił funkcję kierownika tej jednostki. Od 2011 do 2014 roku był zatrudniony jako koordynator na Oddziale Klinicznym Ortopedii i Traumatologii Chirurgii Narządu Ruchu Pomorskiego Centrum Traumatologii.
W czasie studiów był sekretarzem Rady Uczelnianej Zrzeszenia Studentów Polskich i prezesem Klubu Uczelnianego Akademickiego Związku Sportowego Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku.
Specjalizację I stopnia uzyskał w 1967, a II stopnia w 1971 roku. Pracę doktorską pt: „Ocena niektórych elementów chodu u osób ze sztywnym stawem kolanowym” obronił w 1972 roku. W 1989 roku habilitował się na podstawie rozprawy pt. „Wybrane problemy rozpoznawania i leczenia zastarzałych uszkodzeń więzadła krzyżowego przedniego”. W 2000 roku uzyskał tytuł naukowy profesora. Opublikował 102 prace naukowe. Na krajowych i zagranicznych sympozjach, zjazdach i kongresach wygłosił 140 referatów. Był promotorem dwudziestu rozpraw doktorskich oraz opiekunem dwóch rozpraw habilitacyjnych. Recenzował dziewięć rozpraw habilitacyjnych. Od 1990 roku był członkiem Komitetu Redakcyjnego czasopisma Chirurgia Narządu Ruchu i Ortopedia Polska, a od 1999 roku członkiem Rady Programowej czasopisma „Ortopedia, Traumatologia, Rehabilitacja”.
Był członkiem Polskiego Towarzystwa Ortopedycznego i Traumatologicznego od 1967 roku. Pełnił między innymi funkcję przewodniczącego Oddziału Pomorskiego PTOiTr. Był sekretarzem Zarządu Głównego PTOiTr (1991-1994) i przez dwie kadencje wiceprezesem (1995-2002). Ponadto był członkiem założycielem Sekcji Chirurgii Kolana PTOiTr. Od 2003 roku był członkiem honorowym Polskiego Towarzystwa Ortopedycznego i Traumatologicznego.
W latach 1991-1999 pełnił funkcję konsultanta wojewódzkiego ds. ortopedii i traumatologii narządu ruchu województwa gdańskiego i słupskiego, a od 1999 do 2014 roku konsultanta regionalnego ds. ortopedii i traumatologii narządu ruchu regionu pomorskiego.
W latach 1999-2002 był prorektorem ds. klinicznych Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku.
Głównym zainteresowaniem naukowym Profesora była chirurgia stawu kolanowego, zwłaszcza diagnostyką artroskopową, chirurgią artroskopowi, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem metod operacyjnego leczenia uszkodzeń więzadła krzyżowego przedniego, a także tematyka dotycząca pogranicza biomechaniki i ortopedii. Część publikacji poświęcił badaniom chodu.
Był prekursorem artroskopii w Polsce. Prowadził liczne kursy, szkolenia z zakresu chirurgii stawu kolanowego ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem chirurgii artroskopowej, między innymi szkolił ortopedów z Białorusi, Litwy, Kazachstanu, Rosji oraz Chin.
Zapamiętany został także jako aktywny organizator zjazdów naukowych PTOiTr i sympozjów organizowanych przez Katedrę i Klinikę Ortopedii i Traumatologii Narządu Ruchu Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku.
Od 2010 roku był zatrudniony w Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego i Sportu w Gdańsku, gdzie zajmował się dydaktyką z zakresu ortopedii, traumatologii narządu ruchu oraz traumatologii sportowej.
Odznaczony Złotym Krzyżem Zasługi oraz Krzyżem Kawalerskim Orderu Odrodzenia Polski. W 2013 roku otrzymał odznaczenie Zasłużony dla Polskiej Ortopedii i Traumatologii. Podczas ostatnich XXXIX Dni Ortopedycznych w Toruniu w 2021 roku Prof. Stanisław Mazurkiewicz został odznaczony Medalem im. Profesora Adama Grucy. Ponadto w 1992 roku otrzymał medal Zasłużony Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku oraz w 1995 roku medal 50-lecia Akademii Medycznej w Gdańsku.
