Michał Grabowski was born on March 10, 1943 in Węgrów, in a family of physicians. In 1967 he graduated from the Gdańsk Medical Academy (now Medical University of Gdańsk). After completing a 2-year post-graduate internship at Nicolaus Copernicus Voivodeship Hospital, in the years 1970-1982 he was an employee of the Orthopaedics Clinic of the Gdańsk Medical Academy, and from 1978 an assistant professor. In the years 1974 and 1976, he underwent several months of training at Charing Cross Hospital in London (head Professor A. Catterall). He defended his doctoral dissertation “Experimental studies of structural and mechanical changes in long bones after fixation with metal plates” at the Gdańsk Medical Academy in 1978. In 1973 he obtained a first degree and in 1976 a second degree specialization in orthopaedics and traumatology, and in 1980 a specialization in medicine sports. At that time, he was particularly interested in stable osteosynthesis of long bones and sports injuries. In the years 1980-1982 he was a scientific scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in West Germany. From 1982 to 1988 he worked at the Orthopaedic Clinic of the University of Saarland in Homburg under the supervision of Professor Heinz Mittelmeier, where he completed German medical specialization programmes in orthopaedics, sports medicine, rehabilitation, rheumatology and manual medicine. In the following years, he was the head (leitender Oberarzt) of the German Caritas Orthopaedic Clinics in Illingen/Saar (1988-1996) and Bad Bergzabern/Pfalz (1996-2008). During the latter period, he lived for 13 years in nearby French Alsace. He retired on April 1, 2008. Dr. Grabowski was a recognized authority in the development of Polish-German professional and scientific cooperation, and Polish-German-French cultural exchange. An author of over a hundred scientific articles and several book biographies of outstanding orthopaedists. During his sports career, he was a member of the Polish junior basketball team and youth teams. He played in the league teams of Spójnia Gdańsk, AZS Gdańsk, Start Lublin and GKS Wybrzeże Gdańsk. In the years 1969-1972, together with the GKS Wybrzeże team, he won the titles of runner-up and champion in Polish Basketball Championships. Until 1980, he was the president of the Sports Medicine Society in Gdańsk for two terms. A winner of numerous sports awards, e.g. gold and silver AZS badge. A corresponding member (1996) and a honorary member (2002) of the Polish Orthopaedic and Traumatological Society, a honorary member of the Polish-German Friendship Circle of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (2010), awarded the Medal of the Gdańsk Medical Academy (1996), the Medal of the Gdańsk Voivode (2000), the Medal of Prince Mestwin II for outstanding services to Gdańsk (2004), the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland (2008), the Medal of the 100th Anniversary of Polish Orthopaedics of Professor Ireneusz Wierzejewski (2013), the Medal of Professor Wiktor Dega (2016) and the Medal of the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk (2020). He died on March 5, 2023.

Michał Grabowski urodził się 10 marca 1943 roku w Węgrowie, w rodzinie lekarskiej. W 1967 r. ukończył Akademię Medyczną w Gdańsku. Po odbyciu 2-letniego stażu podyplomowego w Szpitalu Wojewódzkim im. Mikołaja Kopernika, był w latach 1970-1982 pracownikiem Kliniki Ortopedii AM w Gdańsku, a od 1978 jako adiunkt. W latach 1974 i 1976 odbył kilkumiesięczne szkolenia w Charing Cross Hospital w Londynie (ordynator prof. A. Catterall). Pracę doktorską „Doświadczalne badania zmian strukturalnych i mechanicznych kości długich po zespoleniu płytkami metalowymi” obronił w AMG w 1978 r. W 1973 r. uzyskał specjalizację z ortopedii i traumatologii pierwszego stopnia, a w 1976 r. drugiego, oraz w 1980 r. specjalizację z medycyny sportowej. W tamtym czasie interesował się szczególnie osteosyntezą stabilną kości długich i urazówką sportową. W latach 1980-1982 był stypendystą naukowym Fundacji Alexandra von Humboldta w RFN. Od 1982 do 1988 roku pracował w Klinice Ortopedii Uniwersytetu Saary w Homburgu pod kierownictwem prof. Heinza Mittelmeiera, gdzie zdobył niemieckie specjalizacje lekarskie w zakresie ortopedii, medycyny sportowej, rehabilitacji, reumatologii i medycyny manualnej. W kolejnych latach był ordynatorem (leitender Oberarzt) Klinik Ortopedycznych niemieckiego Caritasu w Illingen/Saar (1988-1996) i Bad Bergzabern/Pfalz (1996-2008). W tym drugim okresie mieszkał przez 13 lat w pobliskiej, francuskiej Alzacji. Na emeryturę przeszedł 1 kwietnia 2008 r. Dr Grabowski był uznanym autorytetem w rozwijaniu zawodowo-naukowej współpracy polsko-niemieckiej i polsko-niemiecko-francuskiej wymiany kulturalnej. Autor ponad stu artykułów naukowych oraz kilku książkowych biografii wybitnych ortopedów. W trakcie swojej kariery sportowej był członkiem reprezentacji Polski w koszykówce juniorów i zespołów młodzieżowych. Grał w ligowych zespołach Spójni Gdańsk, AZS Gdańsk, Startu Lublin i GKS Wybrzeże Gdańsk. W latach 1969-1972 zdobywał, wraz z zespołem GKS Wybrzeże, tytuły koszykarskiego wicemistrza i mistrza Polski. Do 1980 r. był przez dwie kadencje prezesem Towarzystwa Medycyny Sportowej w Gdańsku. Zdobywca licznych odznaczeń sportowych, m.in. złotej i srebrnej odznaki AZS. Członek korespondent (1996) i członek honorowy (2002) PTOiTr., członek honorowy Polsko-Niemieckiego Koła Przyjaciół Ortopedii i Traumatologii (2010), odznaczony Medalem AMG (1996), Medalem Wojewody Gdańskiego (2000), Medalem Księcia Mściwoja II za wybitne zasługi dla Gdańska (2004), Złotym Krzyżem Zasługi RP (2008), Medalem 100-lecia Ortopedii Polskiej prof. Ireneusza Wierzejewskiego (2013), Medalem prof. Wiktora Degi (2016) i Medalem Prezydenta Miasta Gdańska (2020). Zmarł 5 marca 2023 roku.
